After weeks of anticipation, residents from across Whitgift Care gathered at the Whitgift Almshouses to compete in the first ever Whitgift Care Challenge, on Thursday 12 May.
Teams from the Whitgift Almshouses, Wilhelmina House, Whitgift House sheltered accommodation and full care, came dressed in team outfits. Bringing with them colourful handmade banners, ready to compete for the sort after Whitgift Care Challenge cup.
The challenge was split into three sections: a quiz, anagrams and a timed puzzle. The general knowledge quiz featured a Croydon themed round where residents had to guess the name of the iconic buildings such as:
Q What was the nickname for the previously named NLA Tower, which is now called No 1 Croydon?
A Threepenny bit building
Q In which year was the Croydon Tramline open to the public?
A 20 May 2000 Wimbledon – Elmers End
Q Which river runs in an underground culvert through South Croydon to Wandsworth?
A The River Wandle
Q Which department store’s old façade has been retained above the Central Croydon Vue Cinema?
The Whitgift Almshouses team won the first challenge and were the first home to be awarded the Whitgift Care Challenge cup. Everyone who completed received a competitors certificate and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon together.
Visiting Wilhelmina House resident Marjorie said: _“It was lovely to go out and socialise with folks from the other homes.”
Whitgift Care resident Barbara said: “It was nice to see the inside of the Almshouses as I had never been there before. My favourite game was the jigsaw puzzle as it was the picture of the girl from the Sound of Music.”
Keep in tune for the next challenge, to see who will win the cup!
