As a token of thanks to Whitgift House, a family member of a former resident has donated a superb cut-glass trophy to crown the next winner of the home’s annual Flower Day competition.
The ‘Gwen Powell Prize’ is named after long standing resident, Gwendoline Powell, who lived in Whitgift House’s sheltered living flats for 28 years but moved to a care home closer to the family’s home last year.
As a keen member of Whitgift House’s community, Gwen had a passion for flower arranging and would look after the floral displays in Whitgift House’s Chapel, along with her other important role as umpire for the home’s annual summer croquet tournament.
She always took part in the Flower Day alongside her fiercely competitive companions and her trophy will now be awarded to the prestigious first prize winner for ‘Best Flower Display’.
Jovita Rodrigues, Care Officer at Whitgift House, said: “We would like to thank Gwen’s family for the donation of this magnificent ‘Gwen Powell Prize’ trophy which serves as a reminder that Gwen was such an active and much loved member of our community. Our annual Flower Day is a highlight for our residents who are now even more excited to compete for this fine cut-glass award. It will be treasured by the home and winners of the Flower Day for years to come.”
