Residents at Whitgift House celebrated Australia Day with a (remote) visit from author Darrielle Mayhead.
Darrielle’s most recent book, A Women of the West, is semi fictional biography of a settler to Australia during the mid 19th Century.
Darrielle, discussed the challenges which faced the first European settlers to Australia. Darrielle also kindly loaned our residents a selection of items and books about Australia. Our residents, as usual, were very eager to get involved and enjoyed trying on the cork hat.
The cork hat is believed by some to have been worn by workers in the blow-fly infested Australian outback, the cork hat has become part of the stereotypical, almost mythical, representation of the Australian.
Residents and staff agreed – a g’day was had by all!
